Egypt
Egypt is the famous land of the ancient pyramids, tombs and pharaohs. So far, it was Egypt that impressed us the most when it comes to the quality, the size and the greatness of the monuments. All the temples and tombs are simply indescribable - everyone should see them at least once in their lives.
We traveled from Cairo all the way down south to the Sudanese border where the two carved in rock temples of Abu Simbel resembling Petra on Jordan are located. We didn't go to the Red Sea area as segregated resorts is not our thing.
Apart from the magnificent antiquity, there is also modern Egypt and that is a bit controversial topic as safety and pollution issues are present.
Cairo - the country's capital is largely neglected and the amount of trash and poverty is overwhelming. The smaller towns are even more worse off. Having said that, if you have a chance to visit Egypt, do, especially that it's so cheap now. For more tips and info about the ancient sites, see the posts below:
Not so long ago (until 2010), Egypt was one of the most popular destinations in the world. The reasons, of course, are self explanatory - the world’s best known and incredibly well preserved ancient civilization as well as the paradise Red Sea resorts. Although some terrorist attacks on tourists had occurred prior to that year from time to time, the country hadn’t been considered too dangerous. Things changed after the Arab Spring in 2011 and the tourism industry suffered dramatically. Now, some years have passed and Egypt has been slowly regaining its shattered reputation despite the random disruptions of peace that are still rarely happening. What is visiting Egypt now like? Is it safe to travel to Egypt nowadays and enjoy it as a typical tourist destination?
Are you wondering if it's safe to travel to Egypt? Besides the amazing ancient monuments and great fun, these are the not so great things you must be aware of before traveling to Egypt. It's better to be prepared rather than disappointed.
I traveled to nearly 70 countries before Egypt, therefore I’d had some expectations and thought I had prepared myself mentally before visiting the lands of pharaoh. Nevertheless, many things still managed to surprise me in Egypt. The following part is based on my subjective experiences and may differ from what others experienced. However, I would like to share what it was like to follow the trail of ancient Egyptians - from Cairo down to the Sudanese border. I haven’t been to the resorts, so I can’t comment on that.
